The current issue of Classiccars magazine is trailing its next (April?) issue to include an article on Zagato bodied Fulvia and Alfa. Could be interesting and might have some good photos.

Your car, Mr Marr? I think it'll be the Spring issue, April is already out.

Classic Cars issue for May which is on sale now does indeed have an article on Fulvia Sport and Alfa Junior Zagato. Some interesting writing and good photos from a shoot that took place on a cold wet day in November 2008.

Interesting the writer should pick up on the 'Pinking' of the 1600 motor, mine does the same and i've tried all sorts of octane boosting stuff, has anyone found one that actualy works? Must say Colin, your car looks very nice indeed, looks like alot of hard work has gone into it, beautiful!

Zagatoboy Tony,
Pleased you liked the photos.
Yes, pinking is an issue, but if you feed in the gas with some sensitivity it goes away. If you just floor it, then for sure it will pink, then die and go horrid. I think it’s a matter of feeling with the right foot just how much it will take and getting it right. Such pleasure!
The engine in my car had the head planed in ancient times so the CR is a bit more than normal. The additive I use is Castrol Valvemaster Plus and mostly I use Tesco 99 fuel. For the Classic Cars session I think it was on standard 95 octane stuff. The only guidance I gave the journalist was not the exceed 5500 rpm, which would have given him over 110 mph in top – enough, I thought.

Not however, owned by me, as stated in the article, I merely sourced it for Mr Buckley... I should be so lucky, its my favourite Monte colour.

Re Pinking, I dont have this problem not on my HF or sport1600. The latter has Holbay balanced and ported head and holbay 1016 equivelent cams. It was also planed so higher CR. Luminition electronic ignition (static timing set 10 adv) and 35 dellortos provide liquid delivery with no pinking or flat spot using just shell optimax 97.
The HF was horrible and pinked and had a hugh flat spot at 1700 - 2300 ish from memory. The head was shaved to hi 10.5 CR estimate and racing pistons and larger inlet valves fitted. Timing could not cope with +10 so generally ran at +8.
Spent a lot of time fiddling with bits and came down to cam timing which was about 15 degrees out. Anyway I slotted in and carefully timed some Holbay rally cams (from Jai Sharma) which had var1016 characteristic lift and overlap. Now I have a very tractable and gutsy 1600 with no pinking or flat spot (well maybe a just a tiniest one if you are really clumsy pulling out of a junction... but generally unoticed).
I dont think it is the cams, more like the cam timing. Anyway I also only run on Shell/BP premium fuel and also 10 static ignition advance.
