Soda blasting - worth a go

I have bought a soda blaster for £159 from Millar soda blasting on ebay item 260593276924 and it is a great bit of kit. Never tried it before but was faced with a very dirty and oversprayed engine bay on the S1. Very easy to setup and get going.
Castings, internal pressings came up clean in seconds.

How big a compressor to drive it?  Got before/after photos?

I bought a simple blasting gun from Machine Mart for about £30 and some soda bicarb from the net (a Chinese food wholesaler!) for about £9 for 4Kg.  Son Jude used it to blast the carbs on Freyja's Alfa Spider and they look excellent.   The essential is the use of soda bicarb (soluble) rather than sand!

 : My mate got a company to soda blast the wheels off his Fulvia, (cromodora's) they did a fine job, fairly smooth finish, the only problem with 40 year old alloys is the pitting thats been covered up by all the layers of paint. Does anyone have  a cure for the pitting.

If you are going to have the wheels powder-coated (which I would recommend as it seals any porosity), then I believe you can fill any pitting with "chemical metal" filler.   It will not dissolve with the heat from the oven, whereas ordinary body filler will.   I have no personal experience, and would imagine that you will have to be very careful dressing down any surplus filler as the mag-alloy is very soft.

Hi Frank, you might like to look at this site that seems to have quite a bit to say about sand/soda/media blasting.

A lot of useful tips and caveats. I am put off by the mess as I have only an enclosed workshop in  which to do the work and it seems outdoors is best. Maybe I should buy a farm .................... but then I wouldn't have any time for the cars !!
