Lancia Ireland - Cork "Rebel County" Rally, 8-10 April 2011

This year's Lancia Ireland annual rally will take place in characterful County Cork where our rebellious southern members have kindly offered to host and organise a touring route with some interesting sights and visits.

All Lancias and other Italian classics are welcome to participate in the rally and we extend a cordial invitation to our UK and European Lancia friends to joins us on this relaxed weekend - or why not extend your visit and build the event into a longer holiday in Ireland!

Outline Programme: Based in Ballincollig just 7km outside Cork City (regarded by many who live there as Ireland's "real capital"), the event will commence quietly at the Oriel House hotel on Friday afternoon 8 April. The main driving tour will take place on Saturday 9th followed by dinner at the hotel. There will be optional visits to points of interest in the City or beyond on Sunday 10th before departure.

Accommodation: Rooms have been reserved in the Oriel House Hotel, Ballincollig (http://www.orielhousehotelcork.com) at the weekend rate of €99 per person sharing to include 2 nights B&B and the Saturday evening meal. Accommodation can be arranged directly by telephone with the hotel on 00 353 21 4208400 quoting reference "Lancia Group 8/9 April" or contact the organisers below.

Rally Fee: The rally fee will be €30 per car to cover the cost of rally organisation, souvenirs and prizes. The cost of lunches on Saturday and Sunday is not included but we will be stopping for lunch together at a selected venue on Saturday and hope to organise some concession there.

Access/Ferries: Cork is located on the South Coast of Ireland, only 2 hours by direct motorway from Dublin and less than 3 hours by good national roads from Rosslare ferryport. Dublin port and nearby Dun Laoghaire port are served by ferry from Holyhead in North Wales while Rosslare is accessible from Fishguard and Pembroke in South Wales. Ferries are also available from Swansea directly to Cork and from Scotland to Belfast (under 4 hours by motorway to Cork).

Less than 2 weeks to go to the run in Cork. It's still not to late to come along. We have had very good weather over the past week or so and the weather is expected to stay good for the next couple of weeks. Why not take your Lancia on this nice gentle run this april.  David.

Road Closure Friday Night - N25 Jack Lynch Tunnel
For those approaching Cork and Ballincollig from Dublin and the north/N8 or from Waterford and the east/N25 (see detailed directions below), the Jack Lynch Tunnel on the South Ring/N25 will be closed for maintenance from 8pm on Friday night until Saturday morning. From the Dunkettle Interchange east of Cork City on N8/N25 you will have to proceed via Cork City centre taking N8/Lower Glanmire Road until you cross the River Lee and then take the South City Link/N27 to join the South Ring/N28 at the Kinsale Road Roundabout then follow South Ring/N28/N22 to Ballincollig (see below)

Hotel Single Supplement
The special rate at the Oriel Hotel is €99 per person sharing for 2 nights with dinner on the Saturday included. The single supplement for solo occupation of a room is €25 for the weekend.

Applegreen Fuel Concession
The Applegreen Service Station on the Carrigrohane Road west out of Ballincollig (or exit 3 from N22 if approaching Ballincollig - see below) is supporting the event with a fuel discount of approximately 5c per litre on a fill of up to 40 litres - every little helps! - and more than one fill is possible over the weekend. Vouchers will be issued with the rally pack on registration on Friday and Saturday - or try your luck by turning up in a Lancia!

Dinner on Friday Night
Andrew Mulqueen our local organiser will lead a group for dinner at 8pm on Friday night in the Lee Valley Golf Club. Meal cost is not included but rates are reasonable and food is good. Assemble in Oriel Hotel lobby at 7.30pm. The Golf Club is a short drive from the Hotel so we can arrange car pooling for those who want to take a drink.

Walking Festival Millstreet Saturday
A walking festival is taking place in Millstreet, the first destination on the Saturday run so take care to watch out for pedestrians when approaching and leaving Millstreet.

General Directions  to Ballincollig
Here is a map of the general area from Cork East to Ballincollig:

Ballincollig is located on the old road R608 heading due west from Cork City but is best accessed via the parallel new road N22 which is part of the South Ring - a bypass that loops from the east side to the south side of Cork City. The South Ring is made up of the N25, the N28 and eventually the N22. Follow signs for N22 to be safe.

Approaching Cork from the airport and the south (N27) proceed towards Cork City - this road (N27 aka Airport Road and Kinsale Road) intersects with the South Ring/N28/N22 at the Kinsale Road roundaout with the Travelodge hotel. Join the South Ring heading west and towards N28/N22. If you miss this turn for the South Ring/N28/N22 you can continue on towards the City on the N27 (aka South City Link - not to confuse with South Ring) and turn back ie leave N27, cross over and re-join N27 via the South Douglas Road flyover or turn closer to the City centre. Follow South Ring/N28/N22 to exits for Ballincollig (see below)

Approaching Cork from Dublin and the north (N8) or from Waterford and the east (N25), both approaches intersect at the Dunkettle Interchange, a large roundabout/flyover on the east of the City. At this roundabout take the N25 which is the first leg of the South Ring and leads to the Jack Lynch Tunnel, a short un-tolled tunnel under the River Lee (closed on Friday at 8pm - see above). Follow South Ring/N28/N22 to exits for Ballincollig (see below)

Approaching Ballincollig from the South Ring/N22 there are 3 exits for Ballincollig - each involves crossing over the main road if you are coming from Cork city:

Exit 1 (Green Sign - Cork N22/Ballincollig R608) is farthest from the Oriel Hotel and serves Ballincollig east Main Street but with lots of speed ramps. Proceed to roundabout and left into Ballincollig. Hotel straight through town on right.

Exit 2 (White Sign - Ballincollig West R608) is closest to the Oriel Hotel and takes you to the west Main Street via housing estates (straight through roundabout, "Oriel Hotel" signpost at next junction with Carrigrohane Road - turn right, hotel on left)

Exit 3 (White Sign - Ballincollig West, Killumney R608) is closest to the Applegreen Petrol Station on Carrigrohane Road - turn right, Applegreen on left, Hotel further along on left.

In particular we appreciate the support of local Cork/Kerry/Tipp Lancia fans who turned out in strength both to organise the rally and to support it.
 
We greatly appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you again at future events - the Terenure Show in early July and the AGM in the autumn (date tba)

As things stand, and on the strength of this year's success, we plan to return to Cork for next year's annual rally so it should be even better next time!
