Have you considered a white carpet, very fashionable !!!! And it gets you away from the deadly health and safety issue of tripping over the edge of the cardboard.
My daughter has four little boys and had a white carpet. When a man came to clean it his immediate comment was "I see you've gone for the dalmatian effect". It was a very apt comment!!

However, you do find out they are there and where they are when you lie down under the car !!!!!!!!!! (It's only a quick look, I won't change/put on my overalls. OOPS !!!!!!)
