Here are a couple that may help.
Cant open up to see how the hinges work under the parcel shelf though.

thanks tim, i take it the hinges are just welded to the lid??? my stay couldn't have been like that 1 because there is no provision for it on the body shell, yours is a 2nd series though isn't it?? maybe they differ hinges look easy enough to make though

James
You would have to check the parts book re S1 and S2 (I will in due course....) but I would doubt they changed the boot stay etc between the two but I could and am mostly wrong these days!!
Yes they are welded. Seems to me (if you pardon the pun) that the boot is double skinned??
Good luck and great work...
Tim

What a lovely detail !! Something else to look out for the next chance I get close up with an Appia or Aprilia.
How does the stay operate?

By hand!
I always under estimate how high I have to lift the boot lid to get the stay into its mount. It feels the lid is being folded back onto the roof!

This is car 1427 (427th made), 1937. I don't know how original it is. Obvious differences from earlier photos: 1. Hinges bolted to boot lid 2. No boot support strut. Second picture is from inside the car looking back towards the box that contains the inner part of the hinge. Let me know if you want more detail.

Curiously no detail seems to exist in manuals/parts list for S1 or S2.

My '38 car had the provision for the stay, although it was missing (broom handle instead!) and the bolted on hinges. I think as there is alot of pressure on the stay and the mounting is rather weak, if they are missing the most likely cause is because they have broken rather than not having been there in the first place.

I think these hinges were all welded on originally. These pics show what went wrong. The bolt repair is stronger. However my hinges have survived despite a large part of the rest of the lid rotting away in the past. If the prop is installed properly it has to be unclipped and set in place manually of course but when the lid is raised to release it it should swing back into its retaining clip automatically. (It is spring loaded back to this park position.)
