Fulvia S2 1600HF (1971)

« on: 11 April, 2012, 10:23:58 PM »

After some encouragement (thanks, Brian) I have got to grips with Picasa and created a web album showing photos of my 1600HF resoration. It was carried out between 1994 and 1999 in a local motor club workshop in Welwyn Garden City (UK). I had owned the car since 1986 but had little ideas of the horrors concealed by earlier repairs and I had no previous experience of fixing cars before it failed an MOT on 'holes in the floor under the sill'.

Parts were obtained from various sources (Omicron, Sandbach Autospares, Panelcraft) or fabricated with a hammer, dolly and whatever curved object came to hand.  The finished car contains plenty of holes, but these are waxoyling points, not rustholes

What you see is the result of the encouragement, advice and good humour of many people at the workshop, even if they preferred a Wilys Coop to a Fulvia Coupe. I hope it gives somebody some encouragement to perservere. Sorry its taken so long to get the photos out.

Hi Tim,

I'll re-paste them:

The new camshaft is working well.  In fact the whole engine rebuild by Mass Engineering in Great Gransden went well, if slowly (they have racing commitments).  They had new pistons (82.6) made in the US which, though expensive, were well made and probably better than the (unobtainable) Lancia oversize pistons.

Hi Glyn,

Cracking job and many thanks for sharing the story with us although I'm sure that the half has not been told! Look forward to seeing it.

Robin.

Thanks, Robin.

The half that hasn't been told, and which I know very little about, is what had happened to the car before 1986.  Having bought it from a private seller in Woking, somebody at a car show recognised is as once having been the middle car in a 3-Fulvia pile-up!  The story was that 3 Fulvia-owning friends had been racing in a country lane when the first car came across a horse and rider.  That explained the lack of bumpers when I bought it and the twists in the front chassis legs and boot floor which were straightened during the rebuild.  I never expected to keep it this long but after a few years of ownership and time spent at Harry Manning's I was hooked.
