Electrical gremlins!

Re-assembling my S3 coupe after major works and, predictably, I'm experiencing some frustrating electrical problems. First up, the lights all seem to be working ok but ONLY with the ignition on - not right surely? Also the indicators work fine on the passenger side but nothing on the drivers side - a few clicks from the flasher can but nothing lights up. Strangely, the blue power wire to drivers side indicators seems to have become an earth! Switching on the hazards stops all indicators completely. Checked the bulbs/ light units/earths and all connections and can't find the answers so all suggestions welcomed.

Sounds like a bad earth or poor connection to me, just checked mine and the lights switch off with the ignition switch at auxillary(position 1) but are on with ignition on or ignition off/key out(if that makes sense)
