Some of you may have seen my post about a gearbox that whined in 1st and 3rd, and I have had some helpful comments regarding replacement/repair.

Embarassingly, I discovered that the reason for the noise was not a faulty gearbox, but a badly split gear lever boot.
Every time I pushed the lever forward into 1st or 3rd, the split opened up and allowed the general noise from the gearbox into the cabin, when I pulled it back into 2nd and 4th the split was partially closed and so made less noise.

I got a new boot from Omicron today, fitted it, and hey presto no noise- unbeliveable !

Whilst this is a mildly embarassing mistake, it could have been a very expensive one had I paid out to repair or replace the gearbox.

I suppose the moral is that we are never to old/experienced to make a cock-up !

Thanks to all of you who replied to my posts.
