Michael writes-In late 1973,I remember topping up one of the Tourings with 5-star juice(101 octane leaded)at 30p per gallon,and before 1974 was thru it was £1.20 per gallon !! ouch

From Michael on WVU 1 - In eary 1973 I was driving down Earls Court Road in my LHD Zagato Flaminia,and noticed a RHD 3c Touring parked.as with any unusual motor that interested me,I immediately stopped and knocked at the nearest house.A pleasant chap by the name of Richard Caldicote answered,he was the owner and yes,it was for sale.Apparently he had paid quite a lot of money for the car.However,water was coming out of the exhausts,and over a couple of months I traded him down to either £125 or £250.by that time he was in Dolphin Square.I took the engine out,my father rebuilt it with Harry's assistance in shimming the cylinder liners,and it was a very impressive motor.First owner was a firm at Gatwick,registered as 595 GLA-one of a consecutive run which included a Flavia 603 GLA.The colour was beige or something similar.I bought a Daimler Majestic that was derelict in Magpie Hall Lane(off Bromley Common)registered WVU 1.Back then,registration transfer required only the log-book and £5 fee plus completed transfer form.Anyone could attend the Dept.of Transport in Black Prince Road(near Lambeth Bridge),no appointment needed,wait about 20 minutes and transfer was effected,which is how 595 GLA became WVU 1.If you look in the LMC journals for 1973 I put the car up for sale with a club advert.Unfortunately this was just before the fuel price rise as mentioned earlier,and unsurprisingly it did not sell.I took off the triples and manifold(and the short/long distributor drive)and put on a single carb set- up from a Flaminia Coupe(999 NPP) that I was scrapping due to extensive rust.Later the 3C set-up was sold seperate to the car,which I last saw driving along Buckingham Gate,SW1 about 1976/77

Richard, can I just say, am loving all the pearls from your memory, both cars and the circumstances in which you owned, saw or got info from their owners. As a relatively recent convert to Lancia, its great to read and see what things where like back in the 60/70/80s.

I am merely the messenger I am afraid.These are the writings of Michael Clarke with whom I had a chance meeting last weekend at the HSCC Brands 'do'.I am enjoying these wonderful tales and hope that there are more to come.Perhaps I should send them to Jack to consider for 'Viva Lancia'.richard

A lovely front cover Frank.I rather like the 'body colour' detail on the wheels of each car.Shame I couldn't stretch to the good condition blue B10 at around 14K which was part of that article in C+SC a while ago.Many thanks for the offer to send the Michael Clarke correspondence to the editor,please go ahead if you get a chance.I think I have sent the photos which are in 'my pictures' but may be worth sending again.best regards richard
