My heater control valve has developed a leak and appears to be losing water from the top of the valve where the shaft of the lever goes through the top cover plate.

If I leave the valve open, it doesn't seem to leak or at least it leaks very little, but with the valve shut there is a steady drip.

Leaving the valve open all the time is not a favoured option as my car has a new heater matrix and it really works very well so you soon heat up in summer (such as it is). My question is whether or not anyone has experience of overhauling these valves?

From other threads on this forum, I have the impression that there is some sort of diaphragm within the control valve and I guess the lever action of the valve translates into the flexing of this diaphragm. If that is the case, my diaphragm may have perished.

Just looking for some guidance before I start dismantling the valve as I suspect there will be some crumbling pieces inside.

Yes, there is a diaphragm inside which is open and shut by a spiral groove in the lever which engages a pin and moves slightly up and down - the valve is similar to those on the Appia.

I may be able to help you with NEW original parts.

So it isn't likely that I'll be able to repair this then? Sounds like the seal between the "worm" mechanism and the diaphragm must have gone. I'll see if I can dismantle it and maybe effect some sort of temporary repair

Looks the same as my spare for my Series 1 Fulvia Berlina that I'm looking at, originally back in 1999 Omicron carried the diagphrams to repair these so worth checking with them.

Fixed!!!

Easy fix too... £21 for a wee piece of rubber from Omicron... loosen 4 x 7mm nuts underneath valve... unscrew 4 screws on top cover (taking care not to lose nuts)... slip off nasty perished 45 yr old (?) piece of rubber... prise new rubber diaphragm onto plunger... re-assemble... test and smile!!!  Grin

If only modern cars were this easy to work on!

On my HF Coupe the valve has been replaced with a water valve just like the one you find behind the washing machine in your kitchen ! I bought the  car with this mod and it has worked fine as the cable to operate it sits in the slot of the lever and works very well. I don't think I would have come up with that idea myself. I must admit I was impressed when I saw it.  Smiley
