I had a horn fuse blow on my Series 1 Fulvia today – number 7 in the fuse box. I suspect the relay is faulty. On 1st Series cars this relay is mounted in the fuse box, marked 36 on the wiring diagram. It has three terminals, is small and looks difficult to access to replace.

If anyone has any experience of this, please let me know. Also, any ideas of a suitable replacement that might also fit in the box would be appreciated.

There are some Fulvia relays in my store. If you can post a photo of the relay for identification purposes I will see if I have one, which you are welcome to. Richard

While not totally helpful, I suspected my S2 horn relay was misbehaving (in offside front wheel arch) so I dismantled it (easy to remove can) and found nothing wrong. If a fuse has blown suspect a chafed wire, or old fuse. Put a new 16a in does it still blow?

Thanks chaps. I'll investigate further and try to take a photo. The fuse box on Series 1 is in a tray that drops down below the glove box. The relay is right at the back and looks as if it's only accessible by a midget with tiny hands upside down in the footwell. I'll do my best.

Unfortunately, none of my Gremlin-Grandsons (three in number) are yet up to the job, but it’s a nice idea. So, I put on my double-jointed hands and with my specs on upside down I had a look. Although the S1 fuse-box is tricky to get at in-situ, I discover that it detaches from its mounting and with a bit of flexing of the trunk of cables it can be made more accessible – at least to take photos! The suspect relay is the FIAMM one – top right in one of the photos. If anyone has a spare one of these I would be grateful.

Richard, thanks for looking and snapping, but I think yours are different – S2 perhaps.

In the workshop a simple electrical test on the bench would prove whether the relay is faulty. If it is, then apart from maintaining originality, a relay of similar spec would prove the rest of the circuit. (To eliminate the horns from the 'list of suspects', disconnect them of course) Also perhaps worth checking, is that no other items have been added to the circuit in question, which maybe causing trouble. ( My preference would be to have every electriical circuit protected with a suitable seperate fuse where possible)

Thanks again, but further progress is on hold. Yesterday I cycled home from working on the Turner Augusta (and running it!) when I was hit by another cyclist resulting in much swearing and a broken collar bone. Shouting didn't help!
