Has anybody had any success in finding an electronic ignition system that replaces the points/plugs that can be used on a Flavia fitted with a Marelli distributor ?

I use luminition on marelli. If you have the distributor model I can see if there is a kit. I also know Huib in Holland sells a 123 system for Flavia but this may be a different distributor......

Tim,
Thanks for that. I`ll take a look tomorrow evening and get the Marelli model number.

I did a bit of research and the distributor is S102B or C. Anyway Luminition dont list for that distributor. They list for a Lada (!!!) but not for a flavia but I have emailed the company to see if they can advise a kit that can fit (like they do for the Fulvia 1.3 also not listed but fits the Lada kit...).

Tim,
Thanks for doing that. I have been a bit busy at work over the last few days, and haven`t managed to get out to the garage to see what distributor I have. I`m not around tomorrow evening, but hopefully if the weather is okay, will get to the meet on wednesday.

Hi Bob, Pertronix list Ignitor kits for the Marelli S102; the Ignitor equivalent is their MR-LS2 and the Ignitor II (which optimises the dwell angle for rpm) is their 9MR-LS2. I use a Pertronix unit in my Flaminia and it works very well. The replacement baseplate fits straight in with no mods required and the magnet ring just slides onto the points cam. Job jobbed in minutes and worked first time. The only thing that is visibly different from original is that two wires (rather than one) go from coil (+ & - terminals) to distributor. I got mine from the States through Amazon, quite a bit cheaper than buying through the UK agent. The only thing is that if you use an Ignitor II set-up, you must not use solid core plug leads as, apparently this mucks up the sensing for optimisation of the dwell angle.

Bob
Was messing around with my Flavia over the weekend and found timing was way out and points gap all wrong. Had been meaning to do this for some time since I bought the car. I estimate the timing was at least 20 degrees too advanced but I never had pinking when running. Anyway, I rest everything to standard and fired up and was rewarded with a smooth engine that didn't die any more at junctions (believed to be a pilot jet issue - but no more!!).
I have some Luminition parts to see if I can set a set up to remove the points. I have been running Luminition on my 2 Fulvias for last 6 years without problems. I like the idea of light triggering as I believe more accurate through the rev range than induction method of Pertronix although I have always heard very good results from the pertronix users. Will keep posted.

Found out this information re Lumenition:
The Power Module switches the coil on and off to produce a spark. The spark occurs when the chopper blade cuts the infra-red beam. The engine speed and coil current are measured to calculate the exact dwell angle required to produce the same coil energy, each time the spark is fired. Hence the name 'Constant Energy'. The circuitry also compensates for low battery voltage encountered during starting. If the ignitlon is on but the engine is not running, the module will shut down to prevent coil damage.
Obviously will still use the mech advance and retard mechanism so this needs to be as standard.

One of the advantages of the Pertronix units is that there is no power module, everything is inside the dizzy so it all looks original - but it's a small point.

Charles,
Are the two parts you mentioned i.e the Ignitor MR-LS2 and the Ignitor II 9MR-LS2, the only bits needed ?

You need either. 9MR-LS2 is more advanced than MR-LS2. You can buy the basic one for £70 on ebay from US.

Guys,
I`ve had a look on US e-bay. I see that the module replaces the points, but what triggers them in place of the rotor arm, as i can`t see anything in the photos.

Had another look, and can see that the original rotor arm is retained.
