Refitting belts - help please

I am having a bit of trouble fitting new fan and dynamo belts to the Fanalone.  Problem I have is I just cannot get the required tension.

I can see how they need to be adjusted but I cannot get the final 1/2cm of upward adjustment I need.  The bottom nut does not tighten in all the way so the bottom "eye" of the "hanger" (I dont know what the right term is) remains free to move up and down, whereas the top one fully tightens.  I have taken it all to pieces and can see that the bottom nut is not designed to fully tighten as there is a spacer.  So my question (assuming I have the right belts - which were provided by Omicron) how on earth do you get the right tension!

How about the adjuster on the fan spindle housing(after the dynamo belt is tensioned) Richard

Is that the 3 slotted "nut" just behind the fan?  Does that move? 

I cannot get the dynamo belt to have the right tension - when I lift the metal carrier thing and tighten the top bolt it then slips back down as soon as I release it (because the bolt at the bottom wont tighten fully) and I lose tension. 

I know I am being a numpty here and there is an easy answer....havent attempted this before.  Learning all the time.

The pivot(bottom) should have the hole and the slot should provide the adjustment(top) I think. The bracket isn't upside down is it? Is the new belt the same size as the old one? The adjuster on the fan bearing housing does move, and is used last. (I think there is a pinch bolt) Richard

Thanks for the advice.  My conclusion is...it's the wrong size belt...will try to source one that fits somewhere.

My first port of call would be Omicron as I have always found them to be very helpful with advice on the telephone and their technical knowledge is hard to better in the UK. Particularly in your case as you have bought the belts from them.

 Omicron have been supplying me with the correct belt for years, the last two in June, they are both the same size and are part number 2189953 at £4.55 each + vat+ P+P.

Thanks.  I think the fan belt is fine but the alternator belt is too long.  The car still has the metal fan and alternator.

According to Gates website, the right belt is an 6210 MC.  Omicron sent a 6211 MC.

So will try the 6210 and see if that fits.

Very Interesting, I'd like to see how an alternator has been fitted to a series 1 but still retains the mechanical fan, as the mounting for the alternator on series 2 is different to the dynamo mounting on series 1, and the only other Fulvia I've seen that tried to keep the fan with a alternator was a series 2 engine in a series 1, but because the alternator was shorter it meant that it and the fan and the crankshaft pulley were all out of line, so it kept throwing the belt (singular) as they'd tried to run the whole lot on one belt

Any photos of the complete arrangement please.

From Omicron:

Series 1 Fulvias have two belts the same, and we normally use a 735mm
belt here, although you can use a 750mm belt, but you are running out of
adjustment.

Series 2 Fulvias use the 775mm belt for the alternator

Series 1 1600's are the only model to use an Alternator but retaining
the mechanical fan.  Our notes suggest that it should be ok to use 1
series 1 belt and 1 series 2 belt, and we have supplied a number of cars
with no reported problems.

Mystery solved.  It was the wrong belt.  It takes a 750mm belt.  A Gates 6210 MC.  All done and feel chuffed my knowledge of this car is steadily growing.  Thanks for all the replies.
