The new owner of YAJ, Gerard, has joined the Club. Several years owning a Spider without joining up, but the 1300 Coupe has worked it's magic!

The 'new' 1300 was pressed into service as Elena's 'Prom Car'. Didn't get a picture, but it looked so tasteful driving up to the venue drop off compared to the bright yellow Ferrari and a Bentley Continental behind it. The 1977 Rolls Royce behind that was a nice touch though.

There was a brown 1300 Coupe at the National Weekend (YEG738T - Series 2 facelift). Unfortunately I didn't go because of the Tour de France. However I now seem to be getting close to identifying all the working 1300 Coupes in the UK. 'My' two (YAJ & FNC), a metallic blue model (also facelift) owned by a poster on the Betaboyz Forum (W reg??), plus the one above.
Also the Betaboyz Forum may have identified the 'gold' 1300 seen in Manchester by Paul Greenway earlier this year. It is actually a Morocco Beige pre-facelift model registered DOO 43T and confirmed as taxed and tested.
So that's five, and my theory of YAJ being the last pre-facelift on the road disproved.
If the owners of DOO and YEG are on here it would be great to hear from you?

Most years since 1993 I have gone away camping with a group of friends in July or August. Originally we all went in classic cars, originally British ones (prior to my Lancia days; MG Midget, Frogeye Sprite, Mini). As the children came along the classics dwindled away, with my Beta being pretty much the last classic standing!
However things looked up a bit this year, with the appearance of Neil's V6 Corsair convertible. It was it's first proper run post restoration, from Sussex to Cambridgeshire, and he had some fuel vaporisation issues until he disconnected the mechanical pump, bypassing a copper feed pipe bolted to the cylinder head that seemed to serve no purpose other than boiling up the fuel.

A years ownership of FNC effectively finished last night when I collected Elena from her dance class in it. SORN from midnight. Good to check out on an excellent weekend trip (apart from the M1 traffic) to Betameeta and the LMC Committee meeting, clocking up just under 400 trouble free miles.
Must now write up my winter 'to do' list.

Interesting to see another 1300 re-surface. Talking of lack of care I don't think he even knows that it's a Beta, referring to it only as a 'B'! Presumably from the boot badge. Consequently it doesn't appear on a search under Beta. He's still got 9 bids even so.

I finally got round to fitting my NS window winder and mirror. Unfortunately I couldn't quite finish the job, as the previous owner had left off the bolts that connect the glass to the winder carriage. The glass was held up with a long bolt through an aperture in the door to one of the carrier bolt holes. A handy tip if you end up with a winding mechanism broken in a not fully raised position.
I have a pair of bolts from my scrapped door, but they are over at my Mothers, so I'll have to wait until the weekend to finish the job.
The mirror has been a bit of a bugbear with this car, as on my Police driving courses the instructors hammered checking the NS mirror for cyclists and motorbikes, especially when exiting a roundabout at speed. They'd check that you were doing this every time, so for the last 18 months I've found my self constantly glimpsing at nothing!

Police driving course? It seems such an obvious question, but is that because you're in the police, and a driver?
How long was the course? Are there various levels you work through? Do I remember correctly that there used to be "the book" that police would drive to? Still the case?
The only police driver I could name was John Gott who rallied big Healeys on Liege Rome Liege and similar. I thought Ant Anstead from 'for the love of cars' was a police driver but I'm not 100pct sure that was his role.

I've been a graphic designer since completing a 3 year course in 1976. However, there was a point in the early 90's when i found myself made redundant and it was when computers were becoming established in design of which I didn't have any experience. Hmmmm, what to do? Without computer experience nobody wanted to know. So for a couple of years I became a driving instructor. Apart from written exams there is an advanced driving test, then a teaching exam where an examiner tries all sorts of tricks. So the 'lifesaver' looks in the mirrors brings it all back. The rule was always to check the mirrors before you either change speed or direction. We were taught by an ex-police instructor on the driving side of things. He told us we would be taught to police standards with the exception of pursuit driving! In the driving test which was one hour long, I think you were allowed 3 minor mistakes only. I failed my first one because I missed one look in the mirror (can't remember the other two). I remember being a bit annoyed because I remember I had looked, but maybe just before or after he checked. It was well worth it though (passed the next time) and I am a better driver now than before. For instance it's amazing in how short a distance you can stop a car in an emergency if you only dip the clutch in the last few nanoseconds. Then compare the length if you dip it earlier. After a couple of years, with the help of a friend and a bit of bluffing I was back in design and been stuck in front of a computer ever since.
