I appear to have 2 types of hub nuts. The only difference appears to only concern the castellations, one type has thin walled high castellations whilst the other has lower more robust looking castellations. Any thoughts?

Could be, but you would not have different nuts for types of wheel? Is the lower profile one a Series 1 nut perhaps? My S2 parts list only has the taller, less robust type listed.

The front nut has similar castellations but is shallower with a shoulder on the bottom to clamp up the bearing. I think I have S1 & S2 nuts here, question is, will the S1 (if that's what it is) fit an S2? Thread is the same.

I think you have an S1 and an S1.5. The 1.5 series still requires a 6 lug spanner, but is of lesses diameter to fit through small centre of the S2 hub. If you have a S2 nut with the 3 lugs, check its diameter against the S1.5 - should match.

Makes sense, I will check. do you know if they are all interchangeable then? or at least can S1 & S1.5 fit and S2?

Hello Phil
I think the simple answer is 'no'. They will both screw into the hub to retain the bearing, however :- if you intend to use a S1 nut to screw onto the stub axle to retain the hub, it will only go through the centre of the larger diameter of the S1 lock-ring, not the S2. An S2 nut (3 lug) (or the S1.5 6 lug) will go through both. But, the final matter to consider is the wheel being fitted onto the hub. The centre hole of an S1 wheel is larger to locate over the greater diameter of the S1 castellations, whereas an S2 wheel will not locate and fit over the S1 lock-ring, just the S2 size lock-ring. (S2 Cromodoras can have the inner centre face machined out to locate over the S1 castellations of an S1 car).
