Hi
I was moving the engine around on my crane with the gearbox attached so it was at an angle of about 45 degrees when I noticed an oil leak from the bottom of the gearbox. Hmm no oil in the gearbox yet it turned out to be engine oil nice fresh stuff.I split the engine and gearbox (luckily I had not fitted my nice new clutch plate) and took the flywheel off to find a fair bit of oil leaking out certainly enough to see the clutch plate off the piccies might help. The question is it it the big oil seal leaking or the plug in the crankshaft or both! I have the oil seal so I could just replace it.

Hi Jim, I will be taking the flywheel off my engine in the next couple of days and will see if I can comment once I've seen how it works. I am going to replace the oil seal as a matter of course. I am sure someone will have a much more complete answer for you, otherwise a call to Don ??

I have seen pictures of you car via Mike (my brother in law) , but I am sure everyone else would be interested to see pictures of a 1st series under restoration.....

Hi
I think it is the plug the photos perhaps don't show it but the oil was in the central part of the crankshaft and had ran down from there, only concern was the amount that came out on the workshop floor. will get some pics together and post them. Have you got those parts yet?

Hi
took the cover off expecting an oilseal no just some more metal things. do I just clean it all up and put a new gasket on? was thinking if there was too much oil in the sump would it seep past the gear oil slinger when the engine is at an angle. any advice gratefully accepted.
