Insurance?
« on: 31 March, 2014, 03:56:07 PM »
I've just spent 3 hours phoning around trying to find someone that will give a sensible price for insuring a 1998 Kappa SW 2.4 tds.

Only 2 companies will touch it:
Adrian Flux £425
Swinton £856

This is for a 46 yr old, with full NCB, no convictions etc etc... on a policy limited to 5K miles and a car that is garaged overnight.

I can't justify spending that sort of money so the games a bogey!

Whilst they are specialist insurers and they are failing miserably....on the the other forum for a daily driver Maserati ........I put up this info.....

This is the main link I use to shop around -

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/ins...-car-insurance

Here are the links in order of combining total insurers in the market -

http://www.moneysupermarket.com/ click on motoring insurance ( £641 on this site ...with my current insurer)

http://www.gocompare.com/car-insuran...x?Media=SC0012 £731 with this site ( same insurer as I have now).....also £90 more with my current insurer!!!

By combining the top two(above) for 153 providers, that's 72% of the full search

NOT included in the above main comparator sites are the two single biggest insurers below -

http://www.aviva.co.uk/aff/car-insur...MP=BAL-NUD_AFF N Ireland not quoted for....

http://www.directline.com/motor/welc...d=/000/car/aff ( £2,482....ooopppsssss!)

Then the site goes on to recommend "cashback" sites.....( not used these myself, anyone any experience?)...which brings the running total up to 84% of the total insurers listed.

Then finally to bring you up to 100% coverage( their claim).....try try the remainder sites.....

http://www.quotezone.co.uk/car-insur...zone_affiliate £721 with this site ( same insurer as I have now).....also £80 more with my current insurer!!!

https://www.confused.com/car-insurance?mediacode=212 £640 on this site ...with my current insurer...THE WINNER....ok....by just a £1..........!!!!!

http://www.comparethemarket.com/car-insurance/£729 with this site ( same insurer as I have now).....also £70 more with my current insurer!!!

http://www.tescocompare.com/car.shtml£849 with this site ( AA).....£200 more with my current insurer!!!

http://www.uswitch.com/car-insurance/ ran out of steam........lol........

I think guys have gotten quotes off more specialist insurers such as the link on the sponsors section......

It is truly frustrating. I was so looking forward to having the Kappa. Now I'm in a dilemma as the MoT expires on the Thema in 12 days and I've got to get it welded and maybe some bushes fitted in order to have any hope of getting an MoT....

Feels a bit like a Top Gear challenge with a VW Beetle stalking me.

The most competitive quote I had for my Thesis (Value £10k)for an unlimited mileage policy was with 'Advanced' Insurance from Chippenham Tel 01249 461665.
They beat Adrian Flux & Footman James hands down. I could not get any joy from any classic sites as my car is too young (2009) and all the general everyday so called best value sites do not recognise the Thesis (or Kappa) or in fact any model since Lancia pulled out of the UK in 1994.
Hope you find what you're looking for.

Thanks Paul, shall try Advanced. If I could just get the policy down to something in the region of £250 it would be bearable, but paying insurance premiums of ~30% of the value of the car is absurd.

I tried Classic Line when my multi-car policy was up for renewal and they came up with some very competitive quotes for all but the Alfa 159 which put them out of the reckoning. Managed to screw FJ down in the end and stayed with them.

Classic Line quote has ben best yet at £314, but it is only available with a limited mileage policy of 5K pa and that defeats the point of why I am getting a Kappa SW diesel. Not buying the car to go to car shows in, it is going to be for touring the Highlands.

Giving up on this now. Can't justify this sort of insurance premium for a car that we all know they would write off for £400 if it so much as got a cracked headlight.

I am about  to re-insure my Beta Coupe, agreed value, 3k miles, £84 plus £14 uninsured loss recovery with Peter S Taylor - 01273 820303, compares with a £182 renewal figure from Footman James.

Good luck

Mark

In the end, the best quote that I received was from Classicline Insurance. They offered £314, but it was only available with a 5000 pa mileage limit and I just couldn't commit to doing so little miles and had to pass.

Overall, Classicline were the best to deal with. The most knowledgeable, courteous, helpful and enthusiastic about Lancia.

Unfortunately, the Kappa is just too new and too leftfield for most underwriters so I'm not going ahead with the purchase of it and will keep my Thema running as it is still a very capable and reliable car.
