Drive it day 26th April 2015

This was discussed at the last Committee meeting.

One idea that we could do is regionally organise a small event local to members be it a drive to a pub for Sunday lunch or a local tour (to a pub....). Please get involved.

Sunday 26 April 2015 is Drive It Day!

As the dust settles on the Classic Motor Show, traditionally the unofficial close to the historic vehicle ‘season’, clubs will be turning their thoughts to the coming year and will be scheduling events in their calendars... if they haven’t already done so!

The time is therefore ripe to ensure you have the dates for the annual FBHVC Drive It Day in your events diary. This is the day where historic vehicles of all sorts are rescued from their winter hibernation, thoroughly checked and cleaned, and taken out on the road. It’s a fun day and much enjoyed by the general public who have a real affection for these important parts of our motoring heritage.

There is however a serious purpose behind Drive It Day. The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs, which devised and continues to promote the event, exists to protect historic vehicle owners’ rights to use the public highway and Drive It Day is a tangible and thankfully peaceful demonstration of enthusiasts exercising that right.

It has been estimated that something like a quarter of a million historic vehicles take to the roads on Drive It Day and clubs traditionally hold meetings and ‘scenic runs’, very often as their season opener. Given the purpose of the event the more the merrier! This year the event reverts to its original format where FBHVC promotes the event nationally and clubs are free to select routes and venues to suit their particular requirements.

“Drive It Day seems to gain in popularity each year”, says national co-ordinator, Ken Coad, “We get all types of vehicles, four, two and three wheelers, trucks, buses, tractors and even former military vehicles. The variety is endless and probably the only common factor is their age. To be classed as historic, a vehicle must be 30 years old or more.”

Scramble

Our 5th Sunday Brunch Scramble will coincide with FBHVC’s International Drive It Day on the 26th April.  The gates to Bicester Heritage’s airfield and Technical Site will open to welcome the public once more, with a hearty breakfast and an abundance of vintage and classic vehicles and aircraft on display. The 48-acre Technical Site will host a display of visitors’ vehicles which, in a similar fashion to January’s event, will fill the tree-lined avenues of the UK’s most complete WW2 bomber station.

The Specialists based at Bicester Heritage will open the doors to their freshly restored 1920s and ‘30s buildings, allowing behind the scenes access to their showrooms and workshops (specialising in upholstery, vintage Bentley engineering, specialist storage, vintage, classic and racing car and bike sales, plus much more) on a site that is normally accessible by appointment only. Visitors who arrive in and on their cherished vehicles are encouraged to park their pride and joy around the base, adding to a display of machines from all ages. Elsewhere on the Technical Site Brooklands Museum are planning a display, whilst the former RAF Motor Transport Yard will fill with automobilia stands and food stalls.  We are delighted to welcome the following traders:

Sue Scott, Shot by Products, Graeme Simpson, Terry Smith, the VSCC, Colin Warrington, Richard Wade along with our own Bicester Heritage stand.  We will also welcome students and staff from the Classic Vehicle Restoration apprenticeship at Banbury & Bicester College.

Vintage aircraft are expected to land in the morning and form a static display on the edge of the airfield’s perimeter track where, by popular demand, the WW1 Aviation Heritage Trust will start up and run their magnificent RAF BE2e biplane. Also on the airfield The Bicester Gliding Centre will be offering glider flights and a chance to try their gliding simulator.  Please contact Tiggy Atkinson on 01869 327928 to book a glider flight at the Brunch and receive 10% off the normal booking price as a Brunch guest.

Entry for historic vehicles, motorbikes and sports cars will be offered at a discounted price of £5 per vehicle, £10 for modern vehicles.  Gates will open from 9am (for historic vehicles), 10.30am for modern cars and close at 2pm.  Strictly no dogs please

It's a very interesting place if you like old cars! I just hope the catering facilities are improved. The VSCC held their December driving tests there and everyone enjoyed it.

 .... and it is raining!!!!! Murphy's law has no exceptions!!

However, it is forecast to brighten up later so there is hope. I hope get the Appia out, I started it last week to shuffle things around, but that is another story!!!

Drove all the way to Bristol on Friday didnt see another classic car let alone another Lancia. Then today we drove back from Ben Courage's 180 miles to Colchester - again did not see another classic car on the Road. Admittedly, most was motorway but never the less.....hope the organised stuff happened. pics for the forum and VL?

I went out in Juliet's Appia , 120 kms and not a single classic ! A few R4's and 2CV's, but they are used everyday so don't count ......

I didn't take the Aurelia out today, as i did 90+ miles in it yesterday attending the Bristol Italian Auto Moto Festival, but I did go for a quick drive in an early Lamborghini.  see photo!
