Noel was spot on!
With the help of Paul Atkinson I took out the engine and gearbox and once out could get the back plate off. There was no pin holding the drive gear for the speedometer.
I agree with the dimensions of the holes - ie 2mm in the gear and 3mm in the drive shaft. To me, as a non-mechanic, it seems odd as there is 0.5mm slack all around and so there would be chatter with increase/decreases in speed. Lanic got little wrong mechanically - except the sheer awkwardness of working on the Aprilia vs the Augusta - so presumably there is a good reason to do it this way.

Whilst the engine is out I was looking around and noted that the central leaf spring on 2 of the engine mounts is broken. Only seen when I took them out to clean them thoroughly.

Anyway, now a Bank Holiday and so engineering suppliers all closed until Tuesday so will just clean the engine and bay or perhaps take the B10 for a workout.

Brian,
Did you find the remains of the locating pin? Interesting that you seem to have the version of the speedo gear with just the hole to locate it on the output shaft, I drilled it out to 3mm and fitted a hardened 3mm pin. I've since seen two other gears with a keyway, a much better thing. Anyway glad you managed to get the back off the gearbox.

In my post for "Lanic" read "Lancia"!
I think I will drill out to 3mm too as seems a logical thing to do.
I was impressed how easily the engine came out once all the connections were disconnected but not in the process of disconnection!

I did not find the pin - I planned to flush the gearbox whilst out and see if anything appears but will not open it - is this enough?
