Like the night shot - which car are we looking out from? I designed one of the trade stands there this year along with my colleague in the UK. I did all the work, guess which one of us got the free 3 day access everywhere pass..............

You had better start saving! I have been a few times, but I have never had to pay to get in! Really great photos and description of the race, by the way. Regards, John you're not wrong there John, I was a GRRC Member from 1999 to 2010 but it just got too expensive for my pension, but I wish I could still afford it as it's a fantastic event, as is the Festival of Speed. What stand did you design?
What car am I in...? Anyone willing to guess?
In terms of value for money its a long time since I went. It had got expensive and crowded and a bit "fancy dress" and I (we) gave it up. Going back this year I never queued for food or drink and never spectated other than right on the fence. Paddocks are no more crowded than the early days as the "just there for a day out" punters are in Tesco or the Earles Court or the trade stands etc etc (etc etc etc etc etc). A big shock was how much was over the road - the size of the Bromley Pagent. A couple I spoke to pay for Friday and Sunday and spend the Saturday for free over the road. There's a big screen, trade village, auction, beer tents and street food, fun fair, wall-o-death, perhaps a thousand classics parked up, you get the airshow.
I suppose I took it for what it has now become without prejudice or comparison and it is brilliant. I did two days and I'd have happily done a third - however I paid a tenner on my way home from Dorset and saw some hillclimbing at Guston Down, a great day out in its own right.
Back again next year? Perhaps on my own (or with friends) as as a family day out it gets eye-wateringly expensive. It might be great value for "the price of a west end show" but the rest of the family would rather the west end show, or rent a house for a week away somewhere.

Something else easily forgotten about Goodwood is that it is the very best actual motor racing you are ever going to see: an all star cast of drivers joyfully pushing each other about in absolute fantasy grids of cars. For sure the unique central steering prototype Landrover was a treat and the Spitfire display choked me and it was a privilage to meet Jim Stokes but the racing was fantastic. No show from the Vulcan? But a trice next to everything else there.

Is the car in the night shot the old Wolseley your friend restored? Other than that the big high bonnet looks a bit Yankee. The stand was someone who does retro typre neon signs. It had a 50's American diner theme.

That Blenheim was the standout of the festival.
Seeing the red Aurelia on the grid on the big screen was a bit surreal.

The Ferrari 166 was gorgeous, probably the car I'd most want to hop in and drive home. Walking round to the GRRC track side parking the Frogeye looked so similar and it occurred to me that the drive home in that wouldn't be so different to the 166. Not quite as rich a soundtrack and not quite so stylish a dash but closer to the 166 than any normal car.
The Nash saloon was Tom's biggest eye opener. It came third up against all sorts of exotica. Out on track it was the contrast between the 'Miss Marple' looks and a crisp race engine bark. He got another shock again in the paddock with just how ordinary the engine looked and the "river launch" dash. No obvious weight saving, nicely trimmed, glass not perspex. I've seen it before with a baby seat in the back.

Wow David. Such great photos - lots of things we didn't see so lovely to have your photos.
Totally surreal to see the Aurelia on that big screen - the angle makes it look like we were 3rd or 4th on the grid not 11th! Some great shots of the car but that midget driver needs a cushion! I wouldn't mind but I'm not short, it's just the seat is so low to fit Mr Ks stupidly long body in.....
