another update, alan wesson and will how are sitting outside city auto's turin at the moment waiting for them to finish their lunch, alan offered to collect it for me as he happened to be in turin with his trailer anyway RESULT!!!, none of us have got a clue at the moment what i've bought, as soon as i get some photo's i will post them

i've spoken to alan via txt message, he's got it and on route home with it, it should be back in the uk monday, he tells me its in a hell of a state with most of 1 of the front wings and A post missing!!! this is from an accident that was never repaired and left to rot, he said its a BIG BIG restoration only for the brave so sounds a promising challange  ;D if i'm honest straight forward resto's bore me so i look forward to the challange, my aim is to collect either next sat/sun, i've had a qoute to sand blast the whole thing approx £300 which i felt was a bargain so this will be my 1st step with it so i can see whats actually left of it,i've also bought an s2 appia as a doner car for all the parts i need as the pickup is a bare shell with three and a half wings and spare wheel compartment lid, apparently the s2 is "in a hell of a state" also so is ideal to donate all its parts (i'd never scrap a good 1!!) hopefully collecting the s2 tomorrow but wont know until this evening, this meens another "EPIC ADVENTURE OF CHUGGA AND WARBY" so pictures will follow as soon as i have some.....................we promise to AMUSE  ;)

myself and chugga have gone high tech and this is a live update of our journey to ppppppppppppick up a pickup. its rather chilly its minus3 and we are making good progress only 245 to go.

162 miles to go just been out to de ice window now at services going to lighten the load!

after stoping at nearly every services down the m5 for various reasons like spare wheel on trailor working its way loose and to de ice and clean the windscreen as the screen jets are froze we are now approaching the wooky hole.

watch out for the witch ....

I saw a picture of your next project at the Surrey meeting on Thursday evening on Will's phone whilst a blizzard raged outside, looks like you will be busy!  But not a problem for you of course, I look forward to seeing how you get on with this enterprise.   ;D

 
I was at Exeter for four years so familiar - and very lovely - territory.  The weather here is perfect for raiders.  Keep taking photos!!

We also need to know what the tunes are - CDs, IPOD, wireless?   For me its Absolute Radio, and DAB is the best thing since the heated rear window.

...and of course what's SO good about the heated rear window is that it keeps the hands warm when pushing...

the keen eyed person will notice between this thread and the collection journey topic will notice my trailer suddenly changed, this was because we couldn't get it off alans trailer !!!! so i pinched his trailer and he's got mine at the moment  ::) luckily the truck just went under my ramp on the trailer, we lowered the ramp down an used a couple of straps to suspend it, lifted the ramp up and drove the trailer out!! , then lowered the ramp down so that the pickup is now on a trolley, word of encouragement from don cross and my dad, they both said its not as bad as they expected, i admit it is bad but the bulkheads and chassis legs are really good, floors and sills etc are easy to repair so i'm not worried  ;D

 :D i'm glad your both impressed, i've actually started on it today !! removed the front wings and started to remove the rears, i've tried an s3 door in place and it fits almost perfectly which is a huge bonus, as the rear ends of both front wings have been butchered by a crazed man with a chisel they can be "possibly" modified to suite the s3 doors, the scrap s3 has door pillars so alls looking good, next job is to make a jig to pick up on the suspension mounts so that the body doesn't twist when welding and shot blasting, will keep you all posted   ;D

You can tell people that the camioncinos were made after the change over to SIIIs with an SI type front end but once the door pressings were used up they grafted in SIII doors and naturally enough SIII door pillars and frames.   I also "expect" that the reason the restoration of you particular example stalled was that the previous so-called expert failed to realise this and instead spent fruitless hours trying to "adjust" the car to SI doors.  Good job you stepped in.  I expect the previous so-called expert didn't realise that yours was one of the very rare ones fitted with the Aprilia engine and box...  In that spec they ALWAYS had green carpets.

A piece of additional information, the first 500 had Variente 1016 engines and plexiglass windows, having been homologated for the 1957 Naples - Turin - Naples "Corsa dei compensatori di rotella" memorably won by Giacomo Parri /Matteo Philip.

do you think i could get away with saying it belonged to mussolini ??? my dads and doug crowthers asturas seem to be the only ones NOT owned by him ,  ::) it was actually builkt in 1934 as a prototype for mussolini's shopping trips, kept in hiding till after the war the developed by lancia as a good idea, but this is the genuine vehicle lol  ;D

work has comenced, we removed the front wings and started removing the rear decking/planks, however we have potentially made a dickie seat  :D

Your young man is certainly getting some in ;D experience that is, not many places he'd get the sort of training or the opportunity you're giving him, perfect grounding for a job in Classic restorations ;)

brian simple question simple answer ............my dad !! ::) think thats possibly why i make these mad decisions  ;D

There are two Appia commercials entered for the Sliding Pillar Rally, so if you want to see what the finished thing should look like you know where to be!!

thought i'd get this project underway, i bought a pair of alloy front wings from the appia consortium a few months ago, will how had them made but never used them, they are the wrong shape for the pickup as the wings are very different to a standard s1/2 car however they will make a damn good start to replacement wings and far easier than starting from scratch, i've dropped them off with bill lewis who is hoping to have them ready for a 1st fitting in a month or so   ;D

a little more progress, since dropping the wings off with bill he made up aflared arch and fitted it to the alloy wings, i collected them and tried to fit them, what a disaster!!!, what he'd done was 100% correct however the wings where completely the wrong shape and size to fit. the distance between the top and bottom of the wing was over an inch too short and wher the wing meets the grill area was over an inch ot too, so back to the drawring board and start again as there is just too much wrong with the shape of the alloy wings to sort easily and as bill said it would be easier for him to start affresh  :-\ , anyway a week later i got a call to pick up 1 of the steel wings that he'd repaired to try, now look back at the previous photo's 1st and look at the state of the o/s wing and see the job he's done on it !! absolutly AMAZING  :o , fits well and the door fits to it correctly etc

alloy wings will be left in the shed incase i ever need to use them, its honestly more work to make them fit though than repair the old ones  :-\

ha ha , its not the best is it  ;D however its amazing how much better it looks with a "whole wing" and a door fitted , its going to be a long project but if i just keep chipping away at it in spare time "between other projects" hopefully it'll get done soon  ;D

Watching with interest - the structural and creative challenges so far seem less than the tailgate, etc. on the other "pickup thing". though the photos of this one are fairly localised - is this thing still called "Alan"?

OK I just looked back at the Santa delivery pics. Its effing gruesome .... and I wouldn't be surprised if Warby's absence is due to him having fallen into a hole in the "other side" (not shown in the latest pics) never to be seen again

yes its still called "alan" in honour of the great finder lol, warby has been on holiday so havent seen much of him the last couple of wks , however..................................................HE'S BACK!!  ;D  servicing his appia this weekend so you never no maybe a little more "where's warby"  ::) pickup is fairly straight forward and the more i look at it the less worried i am, really pleased with the job bill has done on the wings so far, my aim is to just keep accumilating parts and repairing bits as i restore the other projects then hopefully when i get around to doing it everything will be there like a huge airfix kit  :D

well i've had my 2nd floor built in my unit so i've got space back to put the appia shell back in my own unit!, anyway i've bolted the front wing on and latched the door on for a trial fit, i then rolled the shell over on its side onto its trolly to make a jig to hold it whilst its blasted and welded, work will hopefully commence soon on the jig

back in its hole  :D

my dad did it to me and i turned out normal  :D , alan i'm glad your impressed, and brian...............MOST PEOPLE LOOK AT IT LIKE THAT  :D its had an awefull lot of interest/disbelief/comments (not all good.....well i dont think any were good) however this only makes me more determined, my appia was a similar story, various customers and workers off the ind est saying u'll never do that! its a wreck, 9 months later it rolled out finished, i still see it fairly straight forward especially with my dad around to assist  ;)

The advantage of this one is you can see what you're dealing with...very much what you see is what you get...not the sort of car to dissappoint as being much worse than expected...

I've every faith!! 

...and am greatly looking forward to seeing it progress...
